A Rhône-style white from the Barossa, made by a winemaker who has spent his whole career chasing the Rhône and would still rather you skipped the grape lesson. The 2025 Bugalugs Blanc blends Grenache Blanc, Marsanne and Roussanne, the grapes behind the Rhône's great whites, into a textured, full-bodied white. Tim Smith started as a cellar hand at Yalumba in 1987, later worked vintages in France with Chapoutier, and since 2001 has made his own Barossa wines, openly influenced by his love of the Rhône Valley. Bugalugs is named for the lovable rascal everyone has in their life, and this is where his style is easiest to get into. The blend isn't fixed: last year's used Grenache Gris and no Marsanne, so this bottle is very much a picture of 2025. Tim's own advice is to forget the individual grapes and think "Friday night and a crisp white." We'd add that it's priced to make Friday a habit.

Robert Parker

"The 2025 Bugalugs Blanc comprises a blend of Grenache Blanc, Marsanne and Roussanne, and it is texturally wide, long through the finish and layered with an abundance of fleshy yellow fruits. This is very good. Saline acidity laces it all together, while the phenolic structure provides shape from which the fruit flavor can hang. This is an excellent little wine here. It's a good value too. 12.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap." —Erin Larkin

More about Tim Smith

Tim Smith makes Barossa wine with a Rhône accent: Mataro, Grenache and Shiraz, the region's time-tested grapes, handled with a light touch that favors freshness and perfume over sheer power. We were thrilled to host this Aussie wine legend at the shop, and his wines are the best argument we know that Barossa can be generous without being heavy.

Tim started as a cellar hand at Yalumba in 1987, earned a wine science degree, and went on to make wine at St Hallett, Tatachilla and Château Tanunda. A Barossa-Rhône exchange sent him to work harvests in the Rhône Valley, including at Chapoutier, and in the early 2000s he launched his own small label, based in Vine Vale on the Barossa's eastern side.

He sources small parcels from older, sustainably farmed vineyards across the Barossa and the higher, cooler Eden Valley. In the cellar he keeps it hands-off: no added tannins, enzymes or fining agents, low sulfur, and increasingly large, older French barrels. The Bugalugs Shiraz and Grenache are bottled early to keep their bright, juicy fruit, and they are terrific everyday value. The MGS (Mataro, Grenache, Shiraz) draws on vineyards averaging around 85 years old, and there's a Mataro rosé and Eden Valley Riesling worth seeking out too.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast chicken with tarragon and lemon; crab linguine with garlic and chili; pork schnitzel with a fennel slaw; grilled prawns in garlic butter; a wedge of Comté or aged Gruyère.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic southern Rhône white-blend profile, grown in warm Barossa sunshine: ripe stone fruit, pear and honeysuckle, with a hint of nutty, herbal lift. Typically full-bodied and textured, with moderate acidity keeping it fresh, and a dry, rounded finish. Think of a riper, more generous Côtes du Rhône Blanc.
