Old-vine Barossa Grenache with the oak left out entirely. The 2023 comes from vines planted in the early 1970s, and Tim Smith wants you to drink it with a slight chill. With no barrel involved, all your attention goes to what fifty-year-old vines can do. It's a regional blend rather than a single site, and it's made to be opened and enjoyed now, not studied. Smith worked his way up from cellar hand to winemaker at Yalumba and shadowed winemakers in the Rhône on an exchange. Over a glass of Condrieu below the Hermitage chapel, he decided to start his own label, and his first vintage was 2002. Since then he has focused on the Barossa's time-proven grapes (Grenache, Mataro and Shiraz), in small batches. And the name? "Bugalug" is Australian slang, a fond word for a young person. The thumbprint on the label is Smith's personal promise that the wine passes muster.

More about Tim Smith

Tim Smith makes Barossa wine with a Rhône accent: Mataro, Grenache and Shiraz, the region's time-tested grapes, handled with a light touch that favors freshness and perfume over sheer power. We were thrilled to host this Aussie wine legend at the shop, and his wines are the best argument we know that Barossa can be generous without being heavy.

Tim started as a cellar hand at Yalumba in 1987, earned a wine science degree, and went on to make wine at St Hallett, Tatachilla and Château Tanunda. A Barossa-Rhône exchange sent him to work harvests in the Rhône Valley, including at Chapoutier, and in the early 2000s he launched his own small label, based in Vine Vale on the Barossa's eastern side.

He sources small parcels from older, sustainably farmed vineyards across the Barossa and the higher, cooler Eden Valley. In the cellar he keeps it hands-off: no added tannins, enzymes or fining agents, low sulfur, and increasingly large, older French barrels. The Bugalugs Shiraz and Grenache are bottled early to keep their bright, juicy fruit, and they are terrific everyday value. The MGS (Mataro, Grenache, Shiraz) draws on vineyards averaging around 85 years old, and there's a Mataro rosé and Eden Valley Riesling worth seeking out too.

Perfect Pairings

Grilled merguez or lamb chops off the barbecue; slow-braised lamb shoulder with rosemary; chicken and chorizo casserole; beef and red wine stew; smoky pulled pork.

Tasting Profile

Expect the bright, juicy side of old-vine Barossa Grenache: raspberry, red cherry and a touch of spice, with no oak to cover the fruit. Typically medium-bodied, with soft, fine tannins and fresh acidity, it finishes dry and supple and is at its best lightly chilled. Think of a lighter, fruit-first cousin of Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
