Old-vine Mourvèdre from the Barossa floor. Mataro is the Barossa's local name for the grape, and Tim Smith usually builds this bottling from two valley-floor vineyards: one about 140 years old, the other about 70. Tim started out as a cellar hand at Yalumba in 1987 and made the first vintage under his own label in 2002. His winery openly takes its cue from the great producers of the northern and southern Rhône. He ages the Mataro in larger, older French barrels, usually 500-litre puncheons, so it matures slowly and the oak stays out of the way, which leaves the old vines to do the talking. Every Tim Smith wine is made in small batches of 250 to 700 cases. This is a grower's Mourvèdre rather than a showpiece, from a winemaker who has built his career on the Barossa's long-proven varieties.

"I like Barossa Mataro. Always have done. Here, the 2023 Mataro is earthy and yet bright, with fresh acidity that zips through the mulberry-laden fruit. The length of flavor is convincing, and the wine offers a balanced perspective of Barossa and Mataro. If anything, the acidity is a little on the fresh side, but no doubt that will hold it in good stead for the future."

More about Tim Smith

Tim Smith makes Barossa wine with a Rhône accent: Mataro, Grenache and Shiraz, the region's time-tested grapes, handled with a light touch that favors freshness and perfume over sheer power. We were thrilled to host this Aussie wine legend at the shop, and his wines are the best argument we know that Barossa can be generous without being heavy.

Tim started as a cellar hand at Yalumba in 1987, earned a wine science degree, and went on to make wine at St Hallett, Tatachilla and Château Tanunda. A Barossa-Rhône exchange sent him to work harvests in the Rhône Valley, including at Chapoutier, and in the early 2000s he launched his own small label, based in Vine Vale on the Barossa's eastern side.

He sources small parcels from older, sustainably farmed vineyards across the Barossa and the higher, cooler Eden Valley. In the cellar he keeps it hands-off: no added tannins, enzymes or fining agents, low sulfur, and increasingly large, older French barrels. The Bugalugs Shiraz and Grenache are bottled early to keep their bright, juicy fruit, and they are terrific everyday value. The MGS (Mataro, Grenache, Shiraz) draws on vineyards averaging around 85 years old, and there's a Mataro rosé and Eden Valley Riesling worth seeking out too.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Lamb shoulder slow-braised with garlic and rosemary; grilled merguez with harissa; cassoulet; beef and mushroom stew; charred eggplant with lamb kofta.

Tasting Profile

A dry red. Expect dark fruit with the savoury, earthy edge Mourvèdre is known for. The oak stays in the background because the wine is aged in large, older barrels. Firm but not heavy tannins lead into a savoury finish.
