Vallana is the legendary name of Alto Piemonte, making soulful, traditional Nebbiolo (called Spanna locally) that drinks like it should cost twice as much. Up here Nebbiolo grows on volcanic soils at cooler, higher altitude than Barolo or Barbaresco, which gives the wines freshness, lift and mineral tension. The Vallana family has done it the old-school way for generations: long macerations, concrete tanks, aging in large old botti, and their legendary 1950s and 60s bottles still drink beautifully. The 2011 has a good stretch of bottle age now, so it's settled and savory, ready to drink. One of the smartest Nebbiolo buys in the shop.
