Francesco Versio may not be a household name—yet—but he’s one of the most exciting young winemakers in Piedmont. After years working with Barbaresco legends like Bruno Giacosa, Versio set out on his own, crafting wines that honor tradition while offering a touch of modern finesse. His 2020 Barbaresco is a textbook expression of the region, sourced from limestone-rich vineyards and aged in large botti to preserve Nebbiolo’s purity and transparency.

Red cherry, dried raspberry, and wild strawberry form the core, lifted by floral aromatics of violet and rose petal. Hints of anise, leather, and crushed herbs add depth, while the tannins—firm yet beautifully integrated—provide structure without overpowering the wine’s natural elegance. Compared to its bolder Barolo counterparts, Versio’s Barbaresco leans into finesse, showcasing the lifted, perfumed side of Nebbiolo with a long, mineral-laced finish.

Ideal with classic Piemontese dishes like tajarin with truffle or braised meats, this Barbaresco is compelling now but has the balance to age gracefully for 10–15 years. A rising star’s take on a timeless wine.
