This is Pinot Grigio the way Friuli makes it, not the way the supermarket does: hillside fruit and an aim of purity and precision that puts real distance between it and the mass-market stuff from the Veneto. Via Alpina is Giampaolo Venica's project for making wines from the coolest, freshest corners of Friuli's Colli Orientali at a fair price. The Pinot Grigio comes only from hillside sites there and in neighboring Collio, from vines 12 to 25 years old, bought from growers who farm organically to Giampaolo's standards. That's a lot of care for an everyday white. Giampaolo's view is that too many wines chase high acidity and low alcohol at any cost, which in warm years means picking early and getting nothing but green, sour malic acid. He'd rather the wine show the climate it actually came from. The name means "the Alpine Way," after the drive north through Friuli into the mountains.

More about Via Alpina

Via Alpina is everyday Friulian white made by a serious hand: an affordable project from Giampaolo Venica, of the celebrated Venica family, built to capture the freshest corners of Friuli's Colli Orientali without the price tag of a cru bottling.

The name means "Alpine Way," a nod to the road north from the Friulian hills toward the mountains, and the region's cool night air keeps the grapes fresh and aromatic. The vineyards sit on ponca, the layered marl and sandstone that underpins the best whites of the Colli Orientali and Collio, and the fruit comes from organic growers who work to Venica's standards.

Winemaking is clean and simple: whole-cluster pressing, then about eight months in stainless steel on the lees, with no oak. The lineup is Friuli's calling cards: Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc and, since 2024, Ribolla Gialla. These are bright, stony, unfussy whites with a little more texture and sense of place than you'd expect at the price.

Tasting Profile

Expect the hillside Friuli style of Pinot Grigio: pear, white peach and lemon zest, with a hint of almond and a light floral lift. It's typically medium-bodied, with more texture and ripeness than the thin supermarket versions, balanced by fresh, clean acidity. The finish is dry, with a gentle, stony bitterness.
