Alfredo Currado's Rocche di Castiglione from one of Piedmont's truly great vintages, 36 years on. Vietti was the family estate that first championed Rocche as a single cru — Alfredo began bottling it in 1961 — and the 1989 was made during his prime decade, before his son Luca, after training in Bordeaux and California, began his winemaking career at Vietti in 1990. (Long before the 2016 Krause family acquisition.) Castiglione Falletto's sandstone-marl fruit was always perfumed and structured, and in a vintage like 1989 it produced wines built to last decades. At full maturity now, this is library Vietti at its purest: lifted, complex, fully resolved. A museum piece.
