A single hectare of Gamay at 500 meters, on decomposed granite sand so deep the locals call it arena. The Bastys parcel sits in the village of Lantignie, which means the label reads Beaujolais-Villages rather than Fleurie, where Bertrand's domaine is based; the farming, though, is exactly the same, certified organic and biodynamic in practice, cordon-pruned with grass left permanently between the rows. It's all strict carbonic maceration, no added yeast, no added sulfur, then eight months mostly in old 225-liter barrels before it's bottled unfiltered by the cycle of the moon. Bertrand learned his trade alongside Jean Foillard and Yvon Mรฉtras, which makes a village-level bottling from altitude vines the shrewd buy in the range. Fresh, juicy and more intricate than the appellation suggests.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast chicken with tarragon, charcuterie and cornichons, lentils with sausage, a mushroom tart, or a cheeseburger; lightly chilled, it also works with grilled tuna or a plate of Comtรฉ.

Tasting Profile

Light-bodied and bright, with red cherry, raspberry and a floral, peppery lift typical of carbonic Gamay. Crunchy acidity, very fine and light tannins, no oak flavor despite the barrel aging. Finishes clean and mineral, with a savory, salivating edge. Best with a light chill.
