Named after Jules Chauvet's first natural wine, this is Yann Bertrand's zero-sulfur calling card in its most drinkable form. It's 100% Gamay noir à jus blanc from vines averaging 40 to 80 years old across two parcels — a hectare at Corcelles and a smaller plot at Lancié — both planted at the old-school density of 10,000 to 11,000 vines per hectare, which is the kind of crowding that makes vines fight for their fruit. Bertrand chills the grapes to 10-12°C before a 15-day carbonic maceration, works with no added yeast and no sulfur, then raises the wine seven months in tank and bottles it unfiltered by the cycle of the moon. He learned his trade from Jean Foillard, Yvon Métras and Chauvet himself, and the family vines have been certified organic since 2013. He calls it more than a Beaujolais — a wine with breed that still goes down easy — and that's exactly the trick: no-sulfur seriousness in a bottle you'll finish without thinking about it.

More about Yann Bertrand

It’s hard to believe that Yann Bertrand is no longer the new kid on the Beaujolais block. It feels like just yesterday that we were experiencing our first tastes of his stunningly fresh, juicy, intricate wines and marveling at the undeniable talent of the young Foillard and Métras protégé. Over the years, Yann’s wines have found more poise, confidence and clarity and today they are among the most sought after in the region.

Based in Fleurie, Yann farms a collection of top sites with plenty of old vines. He’s dedicated to natural viticulture and keeping things simple and clean in the cellar. The wines are 100% whole cluster, vinified in large concrete vats and aged in concrete or older barrel depending on the parcel and character of the vintage. They occasionally see a touch of sulfur at bottling, but for the most part, these are zero zero wines that are articulate, serious, and seriously delicious with an effusive, uncompressed energy that keeps you coming back for more.

Recently, Yann has grown his portfolio of vineyards, started to purchase a little bit of fruit from other like minded growers and has even expanded his reach beyond the borders of Beaujolais releasing a loving riff on Tavel with fruit sourced with the help of none other than Thibault Pfifferling.

Flatiron's Take

From the Importer

What has to say about this wine:

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast chicken with tarragon, charcuterie and cornichons, lentils with sausage, a smashburger, or a wedge of Comté. Lightly chilled, it's also very good with grilled mackerel or a Thai larb.

Tasting Profile

Bright and juicy, with red cherry, raspberry and a little crushed violet, plus the faint peppery lift that carbonic maceration gives Gamay. Light to medium bodied, lively acidity, tannins so fine they barely register. Finishes clean and mineral, and it asks for another sip. Best with a light chill.
