This is the easiest way into Yann Bertrand's Fleuries, and the one people are most likely to underrate. His importer calls it the "simple" bottling and then warns you not to take that at face value: it's pretty, it has real substance, and it's about as pure a Fleurie as you'll find. The fruit is 100% Gamay noir à jus blanc from 1.2 hectares, the youngest vines in Grand Pré, one of the estate's more established parcels, set mostly on sandy granite. The farming is certified organic and biodynamic. Bertrand grew up in Fleurie and never planned to make wine. He studied commerce, wandered the French Alps and worked in wine bars before coming home to learn from Jean Foillard, Yvon Métras and Jacques Neauport, Jules Chauvet's quiet right hand. The name, Coup d'Folie ("a fit of madness"), is a joke. The wine is anything but goofy, and like all of Bertrand's cuvées it's made in tiny quantities.

More about Yann Bertrand

It’s hard to believe that Yann Bertrand is no longer the new kid on the Beaujolais block. It feels like just yesterday that we were experiencing our first tastes of his stunningly fresh, juicy, intricate wines and marveling at the undeniable talent of the young Foillard and Métras protégé. Over the years, Yann’s wines have found more poise, confidence and clarity and today they are among the most sought after in the region.

Based in Fleurie, Yann farms a collection of top sites with plenty of old vines. He’s dedicated to natural viticulture and keeping things simple and clean in the cellar. The wines are 100% whole cluster, vinified in large concrete vats and aged in concrete or older barrel depending on the parcel and character of the vintage. They occasionally see a touch of sulfur at bottling, but for the most part, these are zero zero wines that are articulate, serious, and seriously delicious with an effusive, uncompressed energy that keeps you coming back for more.

Recently, Yann has grown his portfolio of vineyards, started to purchase a little bit of fruit from other like minded growers and has even expanded his reach beyond the borders of Beaujolais releasing a loving riff on Tavel with fruit sourced with the help of none other than Thibault Pfifferling.

Roast chicken with thyme and garlic, lyonnaise charcuterie like rosette and saucisson, duck rillettes on toast, grilled salmon, mushroom and Gruyère tart, or a lentil salad with sausage.

Tasting Profile

Dry red Gamay. Expect fresh red fruit with a floral lift. It's light to medium in body, with bright acidity and soft tannins, and finishes clean and juicy.
