The label says Morgon, but this wine's soul is in Fleurie. Dynamite is Yann Bertrand's small, "confidential" cuvée from the sliver of his Grand Pré vines that crosses the boundary into Morgon, just 1.16 hectares on the far side of an appellation line. The soil is arène granitique, decomposed granite that's mostly sand: poor, free-draining and acidic, the kind of ground that makes for concentrated wines. The farming matches the rest of the estate. The vines are bush-pruned by the lunar calendar, certified organic since 2013 and worked biodynamically, and every bunch is picked by hand into small bins and sorted in the parcel. In the cellar, Bertrand's approach to Dynamite is a long, cold carbonic maceration followed by several months in old, well-seasoned barrels. Bertrand is a Fleurie vigneron's son who learned from Jean Foillard, Yvon Métras and Jacques Neauport, Jules Chauvet's quiet right hand, and this bottle lets you taste his Fleurie approach through a Morgon lens.

More about Yann Bertrand

It’s hard to believe that Yann Bertrand is no longer the new kid on the Beaujolais block. It feels like just yesterday that we were experiencing our first tastes of his stunningly fresh, juicy, intricate wines and marveling at the undeniable talent of the young Foillard and Métras protégé. Over the years, Yann’s wines have found more poise, confidence and clarity and today they are among the most sought after in the region.

Based in Fleurie, Yann farms a collection of top sites with plenty of old vines. He’s dedicated to natural viticulture and keeping things simple and clean in the cellar. The wines are 100% whole cluster, vinified in large concrete vats and aged in concrete or older barrel depending on the parcel and character of the vintage. They occasionally see a touch of sulfur at bottling, but for the most part, these are zero zero wines that are articulate, serious, and seriously delicious with an effusive, uncompressed energy that keeps you coming back for more.

Recently, Yann has grown his portfolio of vineyards, started to purchase a little bit of fruit from other like minded growers and has even expanded his reach beyond the borders of Beaujolais releasing a loving riff on Tavel with fruit sourced with the help of none other than Thibault Pfifferling.
