Yann Bertrand makes his name with featherweight, perfumed Fleurie, so his Morgon is where you see the other side of him: this is the structured one, built to deepen in the bottle rather than disappear by the glass. The name tells you where it comes from. At the lieu-dit Bas-Douby the soil is granitic arène, decomposed granite that runs rich in iron, with manganese sitting close to the surface. That's Morgon's classic formula for grip and depth, and just 0.7 hectares of it goes into this wine, split between vines planted less than ten years ago and vines past 50. The work is pure Bertrand: every bunch is picked by hand and sorted twice, once in the vineyard and again in the bins. He learned from Jean Foillard, Yvon Métras and Jacques Neauport.

More about Yann Bertrand

It’s hard to believe that Yann Bertrand is no longer the new kid on the Beaujolais block. It feels like just yesterday that we were experiencing our first tastes of his stunningly fresh, juicy, intricate wines and marveling at the undeniable talent of the young Foillard and Métras protégé. Over the years, Yann’s wines have found more poise, confidence and clarity and today they are among the most sought after in the region.

Based in Fleurie, Yann farms a collection of top sites with plenty of old vines. He’s dedicated to natural viticulture and keeping things simple and clean in the cellar. The wines are 100% whole cluster, vinified in large concrete vats and aged in concrete or older barrel depending on the parcel and character of the vintage. They occasionally see a touch of sulfur at bottling, but for the most part, these are zero zero wines that are articulate, serious, and seriously delicious with an effusive, uncompressed energy that keeps you coming back for more.

Recently, Yann has grown his portfolio of vineyards, started to purchase a little bit of fruit from other like minded growers and has even expanded his reach beyond the borders of Beaujolais releasing a loving riff on Tavel with fruit sourced with the help of none other than Thibault Pfifferling.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Coq au vin; roast chicken with morels or other mushrooms; pork chops with Dijon mustard sauce; Lyonnais saucisson and pâté en croûte; duck breast with cherries.

Tasting Profile

A dry red Gamay. Firmer and more structured than Bertrand's Fleuries, but still lifted and easy to drink. Medium-bodied, with fresh acidity, fine tannins and a clean finish. It should gain depth over a few years in the cellar.
