Yvon Metras is often called the unofficial fifth member of Kermit Lynch's Beaujolais "Gang of Four," a minimal-intervention pioneer working in the heart of Fleurie since the late 1980s. He follows the pre-industrial, additive-free teachings of Jules Chauvet, making wines with little to nothing added and no filtering, and they are some of the most sought-after, hard-to-find bottles in all of Beaujolais. This is the 2012 Fleurie, a back-vintage bottle from a private cellar now showing serious maturity. It has moved well past primary fruit into the savory, complex register that aged Gamay can achieve, and it is drinking gracefully right now. A rare chance to taste a cult grower's wine with real age.

Sappy, incisive and floral in the mouth, offering nervy blackberry and bitter cherry flavors and a hint of smokiness. Finishes sappy and very long, leaving a sweet dark berry note behind.
