A Very Special Delivery: Métras' Incredibly Rare Beaujolais and More

Yvon Métras is one of those names that gets wine lovers' pulses racing. An iconic figure in Beaujolais, his ultra-rare and extremely delicious wines are the stuff of legend. Nearly impossible to find stateside, and not much easier to source in France, devoted fans have carefully tucked these bottles into suitcases for years.

Which is why we’re so excited to share a recently acquired parcel of Métras with you today. Connecting our readers with the best stuff is the guiding principle of Flatiron Wines, and this is one of the coolest, hardest-to-find collections we’ve come across in a long time.

Based in the village of Fleurie, Métras has been at the center of Beaujolais’ quality revolution since his first solo vintage in 1988. Alongside growers like Marcel Lapierre, Jean Foillard, and Jean-Louis Dutraive, and profoundly inspired by the work of Jules Chauvet, Yvon left industrial viticulture behind in favor of natural farming and low-intervention winemaking. The vibrant, soulful, energizing wines of Métras and his cohort helped reshape Beaujolais and kickstart the natural wine movement as we know it.

But why is Métras so coveted? It’s not just rarity. People chase these bottles because they are outrageously delicious. From old vines in top terroirs, the wines have real depth and intensity balanced by an almost weightless lift. There’s an energy and vibrancy that’s hard to put into words, but easy to understand once you take a sip.

Today, this domaine is very much a family story. After working harvests abroad, Yvon’s son Jules returned home with fresh perspective and serious talent. Yvon is stepping back, and Jules is now in charge at the estate while also producing wines under his own label from high-elevation parcels in Chiroubles. Jules’ wines continue his father’s legacy and capture every bit of pure, electric fruit and invigorating mineral crunch.

We’re thrilled to share three wines from the newly released 2024 vintage. First is the iconic “white label” Beaujolais, sourced from high-elevation parcels on the hillsides of Fleurie and made with traditional semi-carbonic fermentation for that signature Métras lift and perfume.

Alongside it are two cuvées from Jules’ personal label: the classic Chiroubles from steep, high-elevation old-vine parcels on decomposed granite and sand, and Chiroubles “La Montagne,” from a separate, windswept hillside parcel that leans even more into freshness and finesse.

It’s a rare opportunity to experience these wines here at home — no plane ticket required. Quantities are strictly limited. All orders are subject to confirmation.
