Beaujolais' Best is Better than Ever: Dutraive's 2023 Fleurie + Brouilly

The wines of Domaine de la Grand’Cour have long stood among the most soulful and expressive in Beaujolais. Since Jean-Louis Dutraive took over his family’s estate in Fleurie in 1989, he has served as a cornerstone of the region’s renaissance, helping to redefine what Beaujolais could be.
Alongside his childhood friends Marcel Lapierre, Jean Foillard, and Yvon Métras, Dutraive championed a return to farming and winemaking guided by nature rather than chemistry, proving that Beaujolais could produce truly world-class wines of extraordinary depth, purity, and unstoppable deliciousness.
Today, a new chapter has begun. Ophélie Dutraive is increasingly at the helm, and her touch in the cellar is unmistakable. While Jean-Louis remains a daily presence, Ophélie has brought fresh precision and quiet confidence to the family domaine. She’s fine-tuned an already beloved style toward greater focus, balance, and vibrancy. The wines still hum with the joyful, wild energy that defines Domaine de la Grand’Cour, but there’s a new clarity that’s impossible to resist.
The Dutraives organically farm 9 hectares of old vines on granite-rich soils bursting with biodiversity. The wines are hand harvested, fermented with 100% whole clusters in cement vats, and aged in a mix of cement, stainless-steel and large neutral barrels. Jean-Louis’s motto — “minimal intervention, maximum surveillance” — remains the guiding principle. The wines are bottled with just a gentle kiss of sulfur, letting fruit and terroir bloom while staying open, vivid, and deliciously clean.
After a few challenging vintages, 2023 brings a return to abundance and brilliance. The wines are singing right now. They’re vivid and dynamic with ripe, spicy fruit, refreshing acidity, and that unmistakable granitic drive. It’s a classic vintage for the estate, and the best since the iconic 2014s.
We’re thrilled to offer two of the domaine’s most beloved cuvées with sharp discounts. These are wines that are perfect to pop and pour right now, but the pro move is to tuck a few bottles away in the cellar, too. They age beautifully, gaining complexity, elegance, detail, and depth. Fully mature, they stand head to head with wines costing 3-4 times as much. They are just that good.
J.L. Dutraive (Grand'Cour), Fleurie, 2023 $46.99
A true monopole, walled vineyard, the Clos de la Grand’Cour is the beating heart of the estate. It’s loaded with old vines ranging from 30-70 years old on soils of granite and clay. This wine is bursting with dark cherry fruit, crushed violets, and exotic spice. The pallet is long and juicy leading with ripe, juicy tannins and a cooling mineral finish.
J.L. Dutraive (Grand'Cour), Brouilly VV, 2023 $46.99
From a historic family parcel with vines up to 100 years old on the steep granite slopes of Brouilly. This is a serious, classic, savory, sappy, Brouilly with layers of ripe red and black fruits, crushed herbs, and toasted exotic spice. More concentrated and powerful than the Fleurie while maintaining that signature Dutraive freshness and lift.
