This is a sweet Riesling Auslese from the Juffer-Sonnenuhr, the steepest, most south-facing part of the Brauneberg hillside, and it's now close to twenty years old. The name comes from the sundial on the slope. The site is the choicest centre cut of the hill. People have prized this hillside since the Romans first grew grapes in the Mosel in the second century. In 1925 the village of Dusemond renamed itself Brauneberg ("brown mountain," after the colour of its slate). The slope stands on its own facing south and is one of the drier sites in the area, which is a real advantage in the wet northern Mosel. This 2006 is one of Oliver Haag's earliest vintages, made the year after he took over in 2005. The Haags describe their Juffer-Sonnenuhr Auslese as a lively back-and-forth between sweetness and acidity, and a 375ml bottle is the right amount to share over dessert or a cheese plate.

Robert Parker

94 points

"The 2006 Braunebeger Juffer-Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese A.P. #6 features mandarin and pineapple in the nose and on a juicy, sappy, very vivacious palate, setting up a fascinating and delightful counterpoint with the creamy, honeyed aspects of the wine. Musky, spicy notes well up as one works this around in the mouth. The finish is even brighter and sappier than in the corresponding Juffer, but less refined, which is not what one would expect. Begin revisiting this in ten years and anticipate 30-40 years of positive evolution." —David Schildknecht

"Mineral, ripe pear. Rich pure apricots on the palate and at the moment seems better balanced than the Spätlese." —Jancis Robinson MW

Wine Spectator

"A peach-infused white, with hints of orange peel and mineral. An open, forward style, with more citrus on the mouthwatering finish. Drink now through 2028."

More about Fritz Haag

Fritz Haag's vineyards sit along the slopes of the Brauneberger hill and the vineyards of Juffer and Juffer Sonnenuhr. Brauneberger, named for the light brown slate that is the dominant soil type here, faces almost entirely south which makes it a bit easier to get fully ripe Riesling in the classically cold, wet Mosel. That has changed a bit recently of course, but this is still a prized site for wines that perfectly balance finesse and power, complexity and airy drinkability.

Like all the top Mosel producers, Fritz Haag produces a range of wines including some very rich, late harvest dessert wines. These wines put the region on the map for luxury wine in the 17 and 1800s, making some Mosel Riesling more pricey and coveted than first growth Bordeaux. But in truth the wines that the locals drank, especially in the summer, were generally off dry to completely bone dry.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Foie gras torchon with quince paste; tarte Tatin or a pear tart; apricot clafoutis; Roquefort or Stilton with walnuts and honey; aged Comté; a mildly spiced Thai coconut curry with mango.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Mosel Auslese profile: ripe peach, apricot and citrus over a smoky minerality from the slate. Wines in this style are typically light in alcohol and delicate in body, with bright, racy acidity balancing the sweetness, and with age they tend to pick up honeyed, petrol-tinged notes. The finish is sweet but clean and lifted, never heavy.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
