A single-plot Malbec from one of Argentina's most terroir-obsessed projects. Altos las Hormigas teamed with 'Doctor Terroir' Pedro Parra to map their Jardin de Hormigas vineyard in Paraje Altamira into 22 tiny plots before planting in 2017. 'Los Amantes' comes from a single 1.2-hectare parcel (plot 15) where silty topsoil sits over big granite rocks shot through with limestone, the kind of chalky 'Mendoza gold' the team chases. Organically farmed, fermented with a touch of whole cluster and native yeasts, then aged in large untoasted foudres so the fruit and soil, not oak, do the talking. A precise, site-driven Malbec for people who think they know Malbec.

"The more ethereal and mineral-tinged of the two Altamira single-plot bottlings, the 2022 Jardín de Hormigas Los Amantes hails from limestone gravel soils with less topsoil than the Meteroa bottling. It leads with an expressive yet coiled nose that dynamically gains dimension with every swirl. While also exuding the floral, lifted bouquet typical of Altamira, there is austerity and focus here that sets it apart from the Meteora bottling. This difference is fully realized on the palate, where a compelling combination of sleek, polished focus and mineral-drenched lift releases into a soaring, discreetly juicy finish that lingers with crushed-stone nuances, managing a completeness that is rare in such overtly mineral-driven wines, which can easily feel like they are lacking depth. That couldn't be farther from the case here. This is a stunning, definitive and transparent example of Altamira Malbec rendered in high definition." —Matthew Luczy

"Coming from one of the top ~crus™ within the vineyard, this wine truly embodies the ever-more burgundian approach to top Malbecs over the previous bordeaux-style school. Blind-tasting students beware … It feels like a youthful Gevrey-Chambertin! The tannins are filagree and the acidity is vibrant with lighter fruit concentration, but a savoury mineral backbone and a floral flourish at the end. As approachable as it is now, this is still a baby " a wine which should evolve nicely for decades to come."

More about Altos las Hormigas

In 1995, when everyone else was planting Cabernet Sauvignon, winemaker Alberto Antonini and entrepreneur Antonio Morescalchi bet everything on Malbec in Mendoza. They were right. Altos las Hormigas pioneered terroir-driven Malbec with biodynamic farming, minimal intervention, and deep knowledge of places like Altamira and Gualtallary. Antonini's global palate brings new ideas every vintage. These are unshowy, ambitious wines from people who actually understand what they're doing.
