Anselma Giacomo's Vigna Rionda from another celebrated classical vintage of the 1990s. This small Serralunga family estate, founded by Felice Anselma and shaped by Giacomo from the 1940s onward, controls a coveted central section of Vigna Rionda, the south-facing calcareous-clay cru widely regarded as Serralunga's, and arguably Barolo's, most prestigious vineyard. The cellar practice is uncompromisingly traditional: long cement macerations, years in Slavonian botti, and a manual press most estates retired decades ago. The 1998 was a classical vintage that produced wines of fine perfume and excellent balance, often outliving expectations. Twenty-seven years on, this is a fully mature library bottle drinking in its prime, the tannic architecture of Vigna Rionda fully resolved into the dried-flower, tar, and truffle register of aged Serralunga.

Perfect Pairings

Simple, reverential food: brasato al Barolo, truffle-shaved risotto, roasted pheasant or partridge, mushroom tajarin, and aged Parmigiano. Stand the bottle upright a day ahead and decant gently just before pouring.

Tasting Profile

Dried rose petal, white truffle, sour cherry, sweet leather, tobacco leaf, and forest floor. Tannins fully resolved; bright classical Serralunga acidity carries a long, ethereal, savory finish redolent of late-prime maturity.
