This is a South African Chardonnay from Ntsiki Biyela, the country's first Black woman winemaker, and it comes with one of the great stories in wine and none of the fuss. Biyela grew up in Mahlabathini, a rural village in KwaZulu-Natal. In 1999, after a year working as a domestic worker, she won a scholarship to study winemaking at Stellenbosch University. She had never tasted wine, and her classes were taught in Afrikaans, a language she didn't understand. She graduated in 2003 and was running the cellar at Stellekaya, a boutique winery, the next year. Harvests in Tuscany and Bordeaux shaped how she thinks about winemaking. In 2016 she started her own label and named it Aslina, after her grandmother. The estate is IPW Certified Sustainable. For a bottle this easy to pour on a weeknight, the story behind it is a remarkable one.

Aslina Wines was founded in 2016 by Ntsiki Biyela, South Africa's first black female winemaker, named after her grandmother. She self-funded the project and released wines in 2017: Cabernet, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and a Bordeaux-style blend called Umsasane. She's working Stellenbosch's finest terroirs with zero compromise. This is wine made by someone who had to invent her own path. The quality is formidable.

Tasting Profile

Expect the typical South African Chardonnay profile: ripe lemon, yellow apple and stone fruit, often with a gentle creamy edge. Usually medium-bodied, it falls somewhere between a leaner white Burgundy and a richer Californian Chardonnay, with fresh acidity that keeps it lively through a clean, dry finish.
