Ntsiki Biyela is South Africa's first Black female winemaker, and in 2016 she self-funded her own label, naming it Aslina after the grandmother whose guidance pushed her forward. The label carries a calabash, the traditional Zulu clay vessel normally used for beer, which she reimagined by filling it with grapes; it's a fair emblem for what she does with Sauvignon Blanc. This is a dry white from Stellenbosch fruit, and in the vintages we've tasted it's been a Sauvignon that goes well past the usual squeeze of grapefruit — it is a grape that too often arrives as pure acid and nothing else. That extra dimension is why this bottle keeps overdelivering for what it costs. A serious wine with a genuinely great story behind it, and no pretension anywhere near it.
