Vaucoupin is one of Chablis' most underrated Premier Crus, and the Picq family — Didier in the cellar, Pascal in the vineyards — bottles a version that quietly outshines many bigger names. The vines were planted in 1990 and 2005 on the Kimmeridgian clay-limestone soils that give Chablis its electrifying minerality. Fermented with indigenous yeasts and raised in stainless steel, this wine is left to express its terroir without intervention or oak flourish. The 2024 is strict, focused, and beautifully pure — a tightly-wound Chablis with subtle saline notes of oyster and cockle shells layered over orchard fruit. It needs a bit of air or a year or two of bottle age to fully open, but the reward is a 1er Cru that drinks well above its station and pays back patience handsomely.

Antonio Galloni

93 points

"The 2024 Chablis Vaucoupin 1er Cru, which comes from vines planted in 1990 and 2005, has a strict, focused bouquet that's very minerally with subtle cockle/oyster shells scents. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity. It's a touch creamier in texture than the Vosgros with more depth on the finish. This is one of Picq's richer cuvées this year." —Neal Martin

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Made for serious shellfish — oysters, sea urchin, Dungeness crab, scallops with brown butter, sole meunière, or a slab of poached turbot. Also delicious with fresh chèvre and herbed salads.

Tasting Profile

Strict, focused, and minerally — green apple, lemon zest, and white peach wrapped around a salty oyster-shell core. The acidity is electric, the texture taut, the finish long and mouthwateringly saline.
