The lighter, earlier-drinking sibling to the structured 2010, du Tertre 2012 offers Margaux's classical charm without the wait. 2012 was a softer Left Bank vintage — picked under more challenging conditions, fashioned for medium-term drinking rather than long cellaring — and that played beautifully to du Tertre's gentle, perfumed Arsac style. Under the late Eric Albada Jelgersma's careful stewardship, the estate (a 5th Growth in the 1855 Classification) consistently turned out wines of refinement at well below classified-growth pricing. Thirteen years on, the 2012 is fully in its sweet spot: cassis softened to red-currant, violet, pencil shavings, a touch of warm earth. Tannins fully resolved, acidity bright, finish long and Margaux-perfumed. Drink over the next several years.

Antonio Galloni

90 points

"The 2012 du Tertre has a well-defined nose: fully-mature with hoisin, dark plum and a light, ferrous edge, not powerful but focused. The palate is well balanced with saturated tannins, fine acidity, quite cohesive and poised with white pepper and clove lining the finish. This is a stylish Margaux for the vintage. Tasted blind at the Southwold Ten-Year On tasting." —Neal Martin

Robert Parker

91 points

"This 125-acre vineyard is beautifully situated in the southern sector of the appellation of Margaux. Dense ruby/purple, with sweet cassis fruit, Du Tertre’s 2012 has a perfumed, elegant, lush, velvety-textured mouthfeel and impressive purity and depth. Drink it over the next 15-20 years." —Robert M. Parker, Jr.

Jancis Robinson

"Crimson at the rim. Smells of blackcurrant gums. Slightly loose and slack – without real tension. Cool and well behaved but not exactly dramatic or attention-grabbing." —Jancis Robinson MW

Decanter

93 points

"This has a lovely balance of power and elegance, with twists of liquorice, coffee bean and bitter chocolate through the palate that accompany, but don't overwhelm, the plentiful black fruits. I like this very much - it dances with minerality, offers plenty to get stuck into and has plenty of life left. 5% Petit Verdot completes the blend."

Wine Spectator

89 points

"Roasted alder and bay notes gently line the core of crushed plum and red currant preserves, reemerging on the finish while picking up a sanguine hint. Drink now through 2019. Tasted twice, with consistent notes."

Wine Enthusiast

93 points

"This is a dense, complex wine that's full of dark tannins piled atop ripe black-plum fruits. The wine has richness as well as lively acidity."
