More about Chateau Pichon-Lalande

Pichon-Lalande has long been the Pauillac for people who like their Cabernet with silk and perfume as well as power. Its vines sit right next to Château Latour, and for decades an unusually high share of Merlot gave it a plush, velvety style all its own.

It was once part of a single Pichon-Longueville estate. That estate was divided after 1850, and this share was run by Virginie, Comtesse de Lalande, whose name it still carries. The other share became Pichon Baron, just across the road. The Miailhe family bought the property in the 1920s. From 1978, May-Eliane de Lencquesaing, a Miailhe daughter, ran it and expanded the vineyard, until she sold to the owners of Champagne Louis Roederer in 2007. Under Roederer, with Nicolas Glumineau as managing director since 2012, the estate has built a gravity-fed cellar, replanted much of the vineyard and converted the vineyard to biodynamic farming.

The vineyard covers roughly 85 to 90 hectares of deep gravel over clay, including about 11 hectares in Saint-Julien. Replanting is tilting the blend toward Cabernet Sauvignon, but the house signature remains: dark berries, cassis, cedar and a famously silky texture. The second wine, Réserve de la Comtesse (renamed Pichon Comtesse Réserve from the 2019 vintage), is a more affordable way into the house style.
