The second wine of Chateau Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande, Pauillac 2nd Growth and one of the Left Bank's most iconic estates. Pichon Comtesse has been owned by the Rouzaud family of Champagne Louis Roederer since 2007, with Nicolas Glumineau as Directeur Général (General Manager and Winemaker). Reserve de la Comtesse, established in 1973, draws fruit from parcels adjacent to Chateau Latour and carries a higher Merlot percentage than the grand vin, giving it a softer, more aromatic, earlier-accessible profile. The 2023 vintage is a current release showing Pauillac's classical proportions: dark fruit, cedar, fine grain, and that unmistakable Pichon Comtesse perfume. A graceful, expressive introduction to one of Bordeaux's great houses.

"The 2023 Réserve de la Comtesse is superb. In some recent vintages, I have felt the Réserve was a bit too serious for a second wine. That is not at all the case with the 2023, a wine of sublime elegance and finesse. Floral top notes meld into a core of dark red/purplish fruit, pomegranate, blood orange and cinnamon. This is the Réserve with the highest amount of Cabernet Sauvignon ever." —Antonio Galloni

"A forward, charming wine that retains plenty of the estate's signature, the 2023 Resèrve de la Comtesse bursts with notes of sweet blackberries, cassis, burning embers and anise. Medium- to full-bodied, fleshy and supple, with a soft, giving profile, this will offer a broad drinking window." —William Kelley

More about Chateau Pichon-Lalande

Pichon-Lalande has long been the Pauillac for people who like their Cabernet with silk and perfume as well as power. Its vines sit right next to Château Latour, and for decades an unusually high share of Merlot gave it a plush, velvety style all its own.

It was once part of a single Pichon-Longueville estate. That estate was divided after 1850, and this share was run by Virginie, Comtesse de Lalande, whose name it still carries. The other share became Pichon Baron, just across the road. The Miailhe family bought the property in the 1920s. From 1978, May-Eliane de Lencquesaing, a Miailhe daughter, ran it and expanded the vineyard, until she sold to the owners of Champagne Louis Roederer in 2007. Under Roederer, with Nicolas Glumineau as managing director since 2012, the estate has built a gravity-fed cellar, replanted much of the vineyard and converted the vineyard to biodynamic farming.

The vineyard covers roughly 85 to 90 hectares of deep gravel over clay, including about 11 hectares in Saint-Julien. Replanting is tilting the blend toward Cabernet Sauvignon, but the house signature remains: dark berries, cassis, cedar and a famously silky texture. The second wine, Réserve de la Comtesse (renamed Pichon Comtesse Réserve from the 2019 vintage), is a more affordable way into the house style.
