Corsica is not the volcanic island you might assume it is. Most of the island wines we get excited about come from strictly volcanic ground — Etna, Santorini, the Canaries — but Corsica is a geological patchwork, and Clos Venturi farms it high in the mountainous interior around Ponte-Leccia, about as far from the Mediterranean as you can get here. Manu Venturi works biodynamically, with sheep, horses and bees doing genuine labor in the vineyards rather than posing for the label. The 1769 in the name nods to the year France completed its takeover of the island, and the year Napoleon was born on it. This is the estate's most easygoing bottling — a pink wine that makes summer feel like a place rather than a season. Serve it cold.

Manu Venturi tends 25 hectares of biodynamic vines on Corsica's highest-altitude vineyard, perched on ancient sandstone and sheltered between two mountain ranges. This geography creates a microclimate and terroir that is utterly unique—neither coastal nor mountainous, but its own thing. The wines are transparent and mineral, a window into sandstone and altitude. This is Corsica without the sea.
