A gateway to the finesse of Clusel-Roch’s Côte-Rôtie lineup, Les Schistes comes from organically farmed parcels planted on the region’s steep, schist-laced slopes. Fermented with a good portion of whole clusters and aged in mostly used barrels, the 2022 vintage captures the essence of northern Rhône Syrah—restrained power, aromatic lift, and stony precision.

It opens with violets, black raspberry, and olive tapenade, edged with cracked pepper and a smoky mineral note. On the palate, it’s medium-bodied and fresh, with silky tannins and a long, savory finish. There’s depth, but not weight—Les Schistes is all about nuance, purity, and site expression.

Drink it slightly cool with grilled lamb, duck breast, or lentils with rosemary. Clusel-Roch 2022 is for lovers of Syrah that whispers rather than shouts—pure, elegant, and shaped by the slope.

Antonio Galloni

90 points

"The 2022 Côte-Rôtie Les Schistes was vinified with 30% whole clusters and aged 20 months in French oak barriques (15% new). Black cherry, meaty undertones, cedar and pencil shaving aromas are all pushed forward. Medium- to full-bodied, the 2022 is concentrated and generous with a savory profile." —Nicolas Greinacher

Robert Parker

92 points

"The 2022 Cote Rotie Les Schistes, sourced from various plots across different soil types and vinified separately before blending, the 2022 Cote Rotie Les Schistes exudes a delicately smoky, intense bouquet of dark berries, pepper, flowers and spices. Medium to full-bodied, juicy and round for a Côte Rôtie, it's fresh and tense, with a lovely, linear mid-palate that leads to an ethereal, perfumed and tense finish. This wine serves as an ideal introduction to the Clusel-Roch universe." —Yohan Castaing

More about Clusel-Roch

Guillaume Clusel continues a family legacy that began in 1969 on the steep granite slopes of Ampuis. His six hectares of Syrah in Côte-Rôtie are farmed organically; his half-hectare of Viognier in Condrieu sits on biotite granite and yields wines of mineral precision. Whole-bunch fermentation and natural practices preserve the fragrance. This is Northern Rhône doing what it does best.
