This is Premier Cru Vosne-Romanée from a domaine with parcels in six grand crus that, until recently, barely let its wines leave France. Coquard-Loison-Fleurot is based in Flagey-Échezeaux, makes nothing but Pinot Noir, and only started bottling its own wine in 2009/2010. Its reputation is new, and under Claire Fleurot's direction, people are starting to notice. The house winemaker, Thomas Colladot (a close friend of Sébastien Cathiard), is known for clear wines that show their vineyards, made with long cold soaks and gentle extraction. This 2017 is traditionally farmed and made in an elegant style. It's Vosne for drinkers who care more about finesse than muscle. Vosne Premier Cru is about as coveted as Burgundy gets below grand cru, and finding it from a name this far under the radar is exactly the kind of discovery we like.

Antonio Galloni

"There are two-and-a-half barrels of the 2017 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru, which comes from Les Beaumonts and some declassified Echézeaux. Matured in just under 50% new oak, it has a floral bouquet with red currant, bergamot, and subtle chai tea aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with gentle but insistent grip on the entry, and quite saline in the mouth. A touch of white pepper and clove appears toward the persistent finish. I like the joie-de-vivre here." —Neal Martin

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast duck breast with a cherry or red-wine reduction; roast chicken with morels; wild mushroom risotto; seared quail; Époisses or Comté.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Vosne-Romanée profile in an elegant, light-bodied register: red cherry, raspberry and violet, with the subtle exotic spice and forest-floor notes the village is known for. Long cold soaks and gentle extraction typically give silky, fine-grained tannins and bright acidity, leading to a long, perfumed finish that favours finesse over power.
