Domaine Lignier-Michelot's home appellation, and arguably the climat that punches hardest above its village-level pay grade. En la Rue de Vergy sits high on the Morey slope just above Clos de Tart, where the topsoil thins to nothing and the limestone bedrock pushes up to the surface — closer in character to the highest Chambolle parcels than to most village Morey. Virgile Lignier farms his two hectares (planted in 1974) organically and treats the wine like a 1er Cru — 50-70% whole cluster, gentle vinification, longer élevage. The 2021 vintage was cool and classical, the kind of year this site loves. Five years on, it's starting to show its mineral, slightly austere depth — but a few more in the cellar will pay off.

"As one would expect given its elevated position on the slope, the equally elegant but even cooler and airier nose features notes of ultra-floral dark berries and a hint of exotic tea. The super-sleek, even silky, flavors possess excellent underlying tension while exuding evident minerality on the chiseled finish of crystalline purity. Lovely juice that is almost delicate yet packs very good flavor authority."

"The 2021 Morey-Saint-Denis en la Rue de Vergy, including around two-thirds whole bunches, has a well-defined bouquet. The stems are fairly noticeable at present, though that will be soaked up by the fruit with time. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy, fine tannins. The 2021 is harmonious and quite crunchy; blackberry commingles with tar and subtle tobacco notes towards its satisfying finish. Good potential, but patience required." —Neal Martin
