Ruchottes-Chambertin is one of the smallest of Gevrey's Grand Crus — only 3.3 hectares exist, and Mugneret-Gibourg holds just 0.64 of them. The parcel sits high on the slope at the mouth of the Combe de Lavaux on thin, stony soil packed with rock, which drains hard and builds the structure and lift that set this wine apart. Henri Jayer called it "a Chambertin raised in Vosne," which is exactly right: Grand Cru Gevrey power delivered with the perfume and silk of the Vosne side of the Côte. Sisters Marie-Christine and Marie-Andrée now run the domaine whose father, Georges, bought this parcel in 1977; the fruit is fully destemmed, fermented with indigenous yeasts, and aged around 15 months in barrel before bottling unfined and unfiltered. 2014 is a classic, cool-edged Côte de Nuits vintage — less flesh than 2012, more precision — and at a dozen years old this back-vintage bottle is just moving into its window, with plenty of road ahead.

"Here too moderate wood sets off notably cooler aromas of various dark berries that exhibit hints of spice, rose petal, sauvage and earth. The highly energetic, detailed and focused middle weight plus flavors are based on a far more prominent base of both minerality and structure but there is no absence of richness on the markedly firm but not really robust or especially austere finish."

"The 2014 Ruchottes-Chambertin is a wondrous wine. Two recent tastings in Burgundy reconfirmed its strong performance when poured blind at the Burgfest tasting. It has an intense pomegranate and raspberry scented bouquet that seems to switch up through the gears with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied and lithe, laden with succulent black fruit and insistent grip, perhaps just beginning to close up for a while. Outstanding. Tasted in Burgundy." —Neal Martin

More about Domaine Mugneret-Gibourg

In Vosne-Romanée, the Mugneret-Gibourg family crafts Pinot Noir from parcels that sit in some of Burgundy's most storied ground. North Berkeley Imports champions these wines, recognizing their singular expression of Côte de Nuits terroir. These reds taste like they've been rooted in terroir for centuries, even if the vines are younger. Serious stuff from a producer who lets the vineyard speak instead of imposing technique.
