From one of the original Barolo Boys, in a great vintage now hitting its stride. Domenico Clerico — who passed in 2017 — helped redefine modern Barolo from his Monforte d'Alba base, and Ciabot Mentin (originally Ciabot Mentin Ginestra, before MGA naming rules clipped the cru off the label) is his iconic single-vineyard bottling from the legendary Ginestra cru. The 2004 was a benchmark classical vintage, and Clerico's modernist style — riper fruit framed by quietly polished oak — has had twenty-one years to integrate. Today it shows the deep dark-fruited density of Ginestra Nebbiolo alongside Monforte's signature structure and spice, with the rounded edges of full maturity. Right in the meat of its window.

"Clerico's 2004 Barolo Ciabot Mentin Ginestra takes me right back to the tasting room at the old winery, where the beat-up square table was always packed with an enormous number of glasses every time I visited. A majestic wine, the 2004 Ciabot has developed every bit as well as I had hoped it would. Today, the tannins have largely softened, releasing a captivating array of classic Ginestra aromas and flavors, all supported by the tension and precision that are such signature of this site. Sweet red cherries, hard candy, mint, cloves, rose petal and licorice are all beautifully delineated in the glass. Vibrant and sculpted yet nicely mellowed by time, the 2004 has enough energy and freshness to drink well for at least another decade. Today, it is fabulous. I bought a case of the 2004 when it was first released. I tasted a bottle when the wine was delivered and have not delved into the case since then. I will treasure every one of the last remaining ten bottles." —Antonio Galloni

"Subtle and perfumed, with blackberry, truffle and hints of Spanish cedar. Full-bodied, with superfine tannins and a long, caressing finish. Balanced and very pretty."

More about Domenico Clerico

Since 1976, Domenico Clerico has been pulling Barolo from the steep slopes around Monforte d'Alba in Piedmont. His four legendary crus—Ginestra, Bussia, Pajana, Mosconi—sit on limestone soils that demand time and respect. At 21 hectares producing 110,000 bottles yearly, Clerico remains one of Piedmont's most respected voices. These are elegant Barolos, the way serious collectors understand them—structured, age-worthy, built to last decades.

What has to say about this wine:

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Grilled porterhouse, braised short ribs with polenta, or wild boar ragù over pappardelle. The richer mid-palate handles aged hard cheeses — Parmigiano stravecchio, mature pecorino — beautifully.

Tasting Profile

Deep, dense, and resolved: black cherry preserve, licorice, cocoa, dried herbs, and Monforte's earthy spice. The modernist polish has fully integrated; tannins are velvet, acidity firm, the finish long and structured.
