From a vineyard that was once an actual copper mine. Schlossböckelheimer Kupfergrube — literally "copper pit" — is a steep, volcanic-soiled site that was cleared and planted by the state domain in the early 20th century. Dönnhoff has long made one of its finest expressions. Helmut Dönnhoff built the estate's reputation; son Cornelius now leads the cellar. Helmut himself thought Kupfergrube was particularly successful in 2007 — a Spätlese-friendly Nahe vintage — and at nineteen years old, this wine is showing the depth and savory mineral pull that the volcanic site is famous for. Pale gold in the glass, with quince and apricot lifted by florals, and a hint of licorice running through a long, slate-streaked finish.

Antonio Galloni

92 points

"Subtle bouquet of papaya, lime oil and cinnamon. The crisp passion fruit flavor is nicely underscored by spicy slate. A charming and wonderfully drinkable spatlese with a sweet, spicy finish." —Joel B. Payne

Robert Parker

"Scents of red and black currant, musk melon, orange, pear, and herbal essences in the nose of Donnhoff's 2007 Schlossbockelheimer Kupfergrube Riesling Spatlese coalesce on the palate into an intense and almost electric core. A hint of caramel points to botrytis as does the spiciness that chimes in on a kaleidoscopic, high-definition finish. it's easy to see why Donnhoff relegates this site to the group whose talents lie in residually sweet rather than dry Riesling. And it's hard to imagine that with its wealth of acidity and extract and sense of sheer energy this will not remain exciting for a quarter century. I could have picked out an Auslese, but I didn-t, remarks Donnhoff by way of at least in part explaining the amazing quality and sheer concentration on display here." —David Schildknecht

Jancis Robinson

"More smoky and riper apricot fruit. Then crystalline lemon on the palate. Concentrated and very promising. Opens up to more minerality in the glass." —Jancis Robinson MW

More about Donnhoff

If you love Riesling, you know the name Dönnhoff. If you don't love Riesling-- yet-- Dönnhoff will teach you why the grape inspires such passion.

Dönnhoff is the greatest estate in the Nahe and one of the best in all of Germany. The family has had four generations to dive deep into their terroir and perfect their winemaking. Their top wines are long-lived and collectible.

That terroir is, of course, key. The Nahe has the most varied soils (including, especially, different kinds of volcanic soil) of any German region, as well as a climate that ranges from very cold high-elevation sites to pockets of Mediterranean warmth. This gives Dönnhoff a painter’s palette of flavors and textures from which to craft a perfect wine.

Off-dry, low-alcohol. Apricot, quince, tropical fruit accents, lifted florals, with developing slate, licorice, and a touch of petrol. Vibrant acidity, deep volcanic-mineral core, long and savory finish.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
