High-altitude Etna from a Canarian winemaker drawn to volcanic terroir. Eduardo Torres Acosta grew up with his father's vines in Tenerife, studied enology, then landed on Mount Etna in 2012 working with Arianna Occhipinti and Passopisciaro. Quota N comes from a half-hectare parcel at 1,070 meters—too high for DOC Etna, hence the IGT designation. The ungrafted bush vines are 80-100 years old, co-planted in the old style. Organic farming, native yeast, concrete aging, minimal sulfur. Vibrant, mineral-driven, and utterly distinctive.

More about Eduardo Torres Acosta

Eduardo Torres Acosta moved from one volcanic island to another, and Etna is better for it. His wines from the mountain's north face are bright, mineral, aromatic expressions of Etna's salt and smoke, from old vines planted so high that some barely seem possible.

He grew up on Tenerife, where his father, a postman, kept a small plot of vines. In 2012 he moved to Sicily to intern with Arianna Occhipinti, then worked as enologist at Passopisciaro, one of the pioneers of Etna's modern revival. He then talked local landowners into letting him have small parcels. Today he farms about 4.5 hectares in eight plots, mostly on the north slope, at 750 to more than 1,000 meters. The vines are old mixed plantings, largely bush-trained alberello, farmed organically.

For his first vintages he trucked the grapes to Occhipinti's cellar in Vittoria, which is why the wines carry the humble Terre Siciliane IGT. He has since converted a small garage on Etna into a winery and still labels the wines Terre Siciliane IGT. The Versante Nord red (Nerello Mascalese-led) and white (Minnella-led) are the heart of the range. Pirrera is a single old-vine vineyard, and Quota N comes from a tiny parcel of ungrafted, 80-to-100-year-old vines at about 1,070 meters.

Flatiron's Take

From the Importer

What Bowler Wine has to say about this wine:

50% Nerello Mascalese/30% Grenache/20% Grecanico-Carricante-Coda di Volpe. "Quota N" comes from a half-hectare parcel of ungrafted (hence piedi franco on label), mixed-variety alberello vines in the contrada of Nave on the north face of Mt. Etna. Restoring this neglected plot of fragile, 80-100-year-old bushes has been a labor of love. The farming is now fully organic. The vineyard lies high up at 1070 meters and features very rocky, sandy volcanic soils.
