Eric Rodez, Champagne Grand Cru Ambonnay Chardonnay Les Genettes, 2017

This is a single-vineyard, single-vintage Grand Cru Chardonnay from a grower who learned to blend at Krug, and then left nearly everything out. Les Genettes is a south-east-facing plot in Ambonnay with only 45 cm of soil over the chalk, and in 2017 its vines averaged 44 years old. Eric Rodez is the eighth generation of his family to run the estate (his son Mickael is the ninth). He fermented this wine in small oak barrels, a habit he picked up at Krug, and skipped malolactic fermentation, industrial cold stabilisation and filtration. Dosage is just 2 g/l, so the sugar can't hide anything and what you taste is the plot and the year. 2017 was an early vintage, with picking on 4 September, and the wine went into bottle for its second fermentation in spring 2019. If you mostly know Rodez for his deep multi-vintage blends, this one is the opposite: one parcel, one year. The disgorgement date is printed on the back label.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Raw oysters or langoustines with brown butter; turbot or sole in beurre blanc; roast chicken with morels and cream; a wedge of aged Comté; gougères.

Tasting Profile

Expect a taut, very dry blanc de blancs: lemon, green apple and white flowers, with the subtle nutty, toasty edge that barrel fermentation usually brings. Because malolactic fermentation is skipped and the dosage is minimal, the acidity typically stays bright and the mousse fine, while Ambonnay fruit adds some breadth before a long, chalky, saline finish.

Champagne

Champagne boasts some of the world’s greatest luxury brands with Krug, Cristal and, of course, Dom Perignon. But it’s also home to hundreds of small dynamic producers—farmers who grow their own grapes (often organically) and make (often with natural methods) tiny amounts of pure and absolutely delicious wine that reflect the individual personalities of their villages and terroirs. Toast with these wines, for sure. But also treat them like the great wines they are: taste, drink, explore!
