Wine-geek treasure from Sicily's interior: Feudo Montoni farms ancient, own-rooted vines of rare indigenous varieties on the secluded 'Island of Montoni,' surrounded by golden durum-wheat fields and old olive groves. Owner Fabio Sireci keeps the formula simple, centuries-old vineyards, deep respect for the land and tradition, and somehow these single-vineyard gems stay astonishingly under-the-radar and affordable. This is the Grillo, Sicily's great white grape, here grown at altitude in the island's heart rather than the coast, giving it more structure and minerality than the easy-drinking norm. The 2023 is fresh, saline, and seriously food-friendly.

Antonio Galloni

90 points

"The 2023 Grillo Timpa is airy and sweetly scented, wafting up with hints of mint leaf, green melon and confectionery spice. This smooths over the palate with fleshy textures and citrus-tinged white pit fruits as a tropical air of inner florals forms toward the close. The 2023 finishes with admirable length and freshness, closing with a youthful tension and a citrus concentration that tugs at the cheeks. Nicely done." —Eric Guido

Robert Parker

88 points

"The organic Feudo Montoni 2023 Sicilia Grillo Timpa (with 35,000 bottles made) shows a bright and grassy aromatic profile with layers of white flower and garden herb. It ends with lean fruit, balanced acidity and some sweetness. "Timpa" in Sicilian dialect means "a steep incline" and refers to this site located at 700 meters in elevation. The wine is fermented in cement with partial skin contact. It matures on the lees with stirring for five months." —Monica Larner

Wine Spectator

90 points

"A bright, tangy white, offering a fragrant range of orange and lime blossoms, blood orange and pink grapefruit zest, and poached quince and apricot. This is lightly lip-smacking and hard to stop sipping, with a snappy, mineral-driven finish."

Wine Enthusiast

92 points

"The nose sparkles with fresh yet savory aromas of lemons, limes, herbs and a nutty cheesiness, but also has a delicate, balancing floral sweetness. The palate is dense, as stone fruit joins more citrus and floral notes, before salted nuts usher in a tangy, mineral finish." —Danielle Callegari

More about Feudo Montoni

Feudo Montoni sits isolated on Sicily's high terrain, so isolated that phylloxera never arrived. The vines are own-rooted and some are hundreds of years old. Massal selection cuttings come only from their own vineyards. The terroir—high altitude, cold nights, sandy soils, ancient roots—gives their Nero d'Avola and whites real freshness, elegance, and minerality.
