Don't call it entry level. Giuseppe Russo certainly doesn't. 'A Rina is his composition across his contrade (Etna's version of crus), several of which he also bottles on their own. He believes the most balanced, complete wines come from blending several sites. The name means "sand" in local dialect, a nod to the weathered volcanic lava soils on Etna's north side, where his head-trained vines sit at 650 to 800 meters. That's very high for red wine. Giuseppe was studying to be a pianist when his father Girolamo, a charcoal seller who sold grapes in bulk from the family home in Passopisciaro, died unexpectedly in 2005. He turned those vines into one of the mountain's reference addresses. It's mostly Nerello Mascalese with a little Nerello Cappuccio, farmed organically. If you want to know what all of Russo's north-slope sites taste like together, this is the bottle that tells you.

More about Girolamo Russo

Giuseppe Russo studied music, intended to become a pianist and earned a PhD in literature before taking over his father Girolamo's vineyards in Passopisciaro, on Etna's north face, in 2004. He inherited 12 hectares and has since grown the estate to 18, with parcels in contrade such as San Lorenzo, Feudo, Feudo di Mezzo and Calderara Sottana at 650 to 780 meters. Everything is farmed organically. The wines are refined, transparent expressions of Etna's volcanic soils, with real complexity and finesse.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Pasta alla Norma; grilled fennel sausage with peppers; caponata on grilled bread; mushroom and thyme pizza; roast chicken with rosemary and lemon; grilled swordfish with salmoriglio.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic north-slope Etna Rosso profile: red cherry, wild strawberry and dried herbs over a smoky, volcanic minerality. Typically light to medium-bodied, with bright acidity from the high vineyards and fine but grippy tannins, finishing dry and savoury. Think of a Pinot Noir's perfume paired with some of a Nebbiolo's structure, in a lighter frame.
