Etna's prodigal son returns. Giuseppe Russo was studying to be a pianist when his father Girolamo — a charcoal seller who sold grapes from the family home in Passopisciaro — died unexpectedly in 2005. Giuseppe came home, took over the vines, and turned them into one of the most respected addresses on Etna's north slope. Feudo is the entry tier — Nerello Mascalese with a touch of Nerello Cappuccio sourced across his contrade holdings near Randazzo, all rooted in the black volcanic sand the locals call sciara. It's lighter on its feet than the single-cru bottlings, but unmistakably Etna: red-fruited, transparent, charged with volcanic energy. 2022 was a warm but balanced vintage.

"The 2022 Etna Rosso Feudo is lifted and finessed with a cascade of wildflowers and white smoke enveloping wild strawberry still on the vine. That pretty and lifted persona translates well onto the palate, silken and serene with sweet spices guided by cooling acidity. Nuances of licorice add a pleasantly bitter tinge as the 2022 tapers off spicy and long, with just a subtle hint of heat as fine tannins frame the experience without slowing its momentum." —Eric Guido

"The Girolamo Russo 2022 Etna Rosso Feudo is 95% Nerello Mascalese and 5% Nerello Cappuccio from one hectare at 650 meters in elevation with 70-year-old vines. This is a delicate and graceful wine with pretty complexity and a medium-bodied approach. The bouquet revolves around pressed flowers, blackcurrant and crushed stone, and there is a hint of exotic spice. This is a release of 6,000 bottles." —Monica Larner

"Giuseppe Russo’s vineyard in the contrada of Feudo in Randazzo – not to be confused with contrada Feudo di Mezzo in Castiglione, where he also owns land – is home to Alberello vines over 70 years-old at 650 metres above sea level. It ferments spontaneously, and after malo is racked into used 26hl casks for 18 months. Quite closed in its youth yet clearly very intense, it conveys a dark-fruited, super-fresh character of red and black cherry, blackberry and blueberry, with some balsamic herbs, plenty of spice and a creamy, chocolatey touch. Balletically poised and with glorious sapidity of fruit, this is in another league this year."

"The nose features savory, tangy aromas of coffee, potting soil, cranberries, dried cherries and bitter orange. The palate is earthy and has a metallic depth, but more of those cranberry, cherry and citrus notes provide a balancing buoyancy. Waves of acid bend firm yet flexible tannins." —Danielle Callegari

More about Girolamo Russo

Giuseppe Russo inherited his father Girolamo's 18 hectares on Etna's north face near Passopisciaro. A musician before a winemaker, he returned to honor his father's legacy when Girolamo passed. Now certified organic, he crafts refined Sicilian wines from volcanic terroir. Etna's diurnal shifts, mineral soils, and sea breezes create wines that rival Burgundy in complexity and finesse.
