Pax Wine Cellars built its reputation on Syrah that channels the northern Rhone from California's cool corners, all pepper, savor, and freshness rather than sun-baked weight. The North Coast bottling is the most approachable entry to the range, a great-value introduction to the Pax style. The 2023 offers juicy dark fruit, white pepper, and a smoky, herbal lift over supple tannins. Delicious young and a crowd-pleasing pour for any Rhone-lover. Pre-arrival, ETA late June.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2023 Syrah North Coast is fabulous. Crushed flowers, herbs and deeply pitched spice overtones weave through a core of dark Syrah fruit. Vibrant and inviting, the North Coast Syrah is a gorgeous wine from Pax Mahle. The 2023 offers a terrific mix of forward fruit and bright, salivating acids. It was aged in neutral 500-liter barrels." —Antonio Galloni

More about Pax Wine Cellars

Pax Mahle started out at Dean & DeLuca in 1997, where Old World wines shaped his palate, and in 2000 co-founded Pax Wine Cellars, whose big Syrahs became cult wines. A split with his investor cost him the name in 2008; he carried on as Wind Gap, then won Pax back in the mid-2010s. Today Pax Wines works out of The Barlow in Sebastopol with partner growers: foot-crushed, native-yeast, whole-cluster Syrah plus Trousseau Gris, Chenin, Gamay and more. Wines of place.

Tasting Profile

Dark fruit, white pepper, herbs, and smoke. Medium-to-full bodied, juicy, and fresh.

After a stage with Antoine Selosse, Alexandre Chartogne returned to the family estate and turned it upside down. He spent years experimenting and tinkering with every aspect of Champagne making from vine management to vessels. He's landed back where he says his ancestors started: in the vineyards, growing perfect fruit and aging in neutral oak.
