Village Mâconnais Chardonnay rarely gets the chance to age, so a 2011 Viré-Clessé from Dominique Lafon is a real opportunity to see what more than a decade in bottle does to it. The label has seen better days, but that's cosmetic. Lafon founded Les Héritiers du Comte Lafon in 1999 as his biodynamic domaine in the Mâconnais, the southern end of Burgundy. The house makes this cuvée from several parcels in the Viré commune. They sit mid-slope at about 250 metres, facing east, on clay-limestone over limestone bedrock, with vines planted between 1950 and 1990. From early on the domaine raised its wines only in large, neutral wood, so the fruit and the limestone show instead of new oak. It's Côte d'Or thinking applied to a modest appellation, and an aged bottle is the best way to test whether that ambition pays off.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Viré-Clessé profile: ripe yellow apple, pear and citrus with a chalky limestone edge, medium body and fresh acidity. Raised in large neutral wood, it typically shows a creamy texture rather than toasty oak, so think a rounder, sunnier Chablis. With bottle age, Mâconnais Chardonnay like this tends to pick up honeyed, nutty notes and finishes dry and mineral.
