Justin Willett and Eric Railsback built Lieu Dit around a singular vision: Loire varieties in California. This Cabernet Franc from two distinct vineyard blocks—one planted in 1998, one a 2015 massale selection—expresses Santa Ynez’s unique geology of sandy gravel, chert, and serpentine through whole-cluster fermentation and French oak aging. Red fruit, black cherry, lavender, earth, and pepper create a wine that tastes both familiar and revelation-worthy.

Antonio Galloni

93 points

"The 2023 Cabernet Franc is aromatic, bright and nicely lifted. Crushed red berry fruit, mint, white pepper and dried herbs open beautifully, giving the 2023 gorgeous aromatic presence and breadth. The purity of the fruit is front and center." —Antonio Galloni

Robert Parker

91 points

"The 2023 Cabernet Franc is red-fruited, herbal, lively on the nose and accented with damp, turned-earth aromas and woody flourishes. The palate echoes the spry qualities of the nose, although it slightly darkens up and turns purple-fruited before finishing with a fragrant, refreshing note." —Matthew Luczy

More about Lieu Dit

Eric Railsback and Justin Willett met in Santa Barbara and spent years obsessing over Loire Valley wines before deciding to grow them themselves. Lieu Dit has quietly become one of the best low-intervention producers on the Central Coast, focusing on Sauvignon Blanc and the odd gem of Chenin Blanc, Melon de Bourgogne, or Cabernet Franc. Fresh, elegant, and deeply thought-through.
