This is California Sauvignon Blanc made by Loire obsessives, and at a modest 12.5% alcohol it's built on restraint rather than ripeness. Eric Railsback and Justin Willett met in Santa Barbara and spent years fixated on Loire Valley wines before deciding to grow those grapes themselves. Sauvignon Blanc is the heart of what Lieu Dit does, and we count them among the best low-intervention producers on the Central Coast. The 2024 comes from three Santa Ynez Valley vineyards (McGinley, China Blue and Grassini) on chamise shaly loam scattered with serpentine cobbles. All three are farmed sustainably and organically. It ferments on native yeast, partly in tank and partly in barrel, then ages in neutral barrels and stainless steel, so the oak adds no flavor and the fruit and site come through. If your taste in Sauvignon Blanc runs more to the Loire than to big, ripe New World styles, this is the California bottle to try.

More about Lieu Dit

Eric Railsback and Justin Willett met in Santa Barbara and spent years obsessing over Loire Valley wines before deciding to grow them themselves. Lieu Dit has quietly become one of the best low-intervention producers on the Central Coast, focusing on Sauvignon Blanc and the odd gem of Chenin Blanc, Melon de Bourgogne, or Cabernet Franc. Fresh, elegant, and deeply thought-through.

Perfect Pairings

Fresh goat cheese crottin over a green salad, raw oysters, grilled halibut with salsa verde, shrimp ceviche, or spring pea and asparagus risotto.

Tasting Profile

Expect a restrained, Loire-leaning take on California Sauvignon Blanc: citrus, green apple and gooseberry with a stony, saline edge rather than tropical ripeness. Native-yeast fermentation and ageing in neutral barrel and steel typically give a light-to-medium body with a little texture, bright acidity and a dry, clean finish. Think Sancerre more than big New World Sauvignon.
