This is California Chenin Blanc from two winemakers who love the Loire, and you can taste where their heads are. Eric Railsback and Justin Willett met in Santa Barbara and spent years obsessing over Loire Valley wines before deciding to grow those grapes themselves as Lieu Dit. It's a small house, making about 2,500 cases a year, mostly Sauvignon Blanc, so the Chenin is one of their smaller bottlings. They say they love the grape because it shows California's ocean and sun together, cool and ripe at once. Their method keeps things light: fermentation with natural yeasts in old barrels, no heavy oak, a winter of aging, then bottling before the next harvest to keep the wine fresh. The grapes come from the Santa Ynez Valley in Santa Barbara County. If you think California white wine has to be big and buttery, this bottle will change your mind.

More about Lieu Dit

Eric Railsback and Justin Willett met in Santa Barbara and spent years obsessing over Loire Valley wines before deciding to grow them themselves. Lieu Dit has quietly become one of the best low-intervention producers on the Central Coast, focusing on Sauvignon Blanc and the odd gem of Chenin Blanc, Melon de Bourgogne, or Cabernet Franc. Fresh, elegant, and deeply thought-through.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Crab cakes with lemon aioli; grilled chicken with salsa verde or lots of fresh herbs; a cheese board with fresh goat cheese, Comté and dried apricots; seared scallops; fish tacos with cabbage slaw.

Tasting Profile

Expect a dry, Loire-minded Chenin Blanc: aromas of yellow apple, pear, lemon and a hint of quince, with a light, waxy texture from aging in old barrels rather than any obvious oak. Think a sunnier dry Vouvray: medium-bodied and ripe, but kept taut by bright, mouthwatering acidity through a clean, stony finish.
