While Massolino's heart is in Serralunga, the Parussi cru sits in Castiglione Falletto, the more central Barolo commune where soils tilt softer and wines tend toward greater perfume and mid-palate generosity. Brothers Franco and Roberto Massolino, with their traditional approach inherited from a house founded in 1896, treat Parussi as a graceful counterpoint to their darker Serralunga bottlings. The classical, well-structured 2013 vintage produced Barolos of balance and longevity, and this Parussi is now beginning a long, expressive drinking window. A wine of fragrance and finesse from one of Piedmont's most reliable houses.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2013 Barolo Parussi, the only Massolino Barolo made from Castiglione Falletto fruit, is also the most accessible of the single-vineyard Barolos. All the Parussi signatures of bright red fruit, flowers and citrus are present, but they are amped by the unnaturally low yields of the year in this site that also give the wine more mid-palate plushness and power than is typically the case. Orange peel, herbs, mint, licorice, crushed flowers and sweet red cherry build in an exotic, beguiling Barolo full of personality. The 2013 Parussi has been alluring every time I have tasted it." —Antonio Galloni

Robert Parker

"The 2013 Barolo Parussi is built like a little fortress with compact black fruit held tightly together by good extraction, bold structure and textural importance. The wine ages in large Slavonian oak casks for 30 months. Some 4,000 bottles were made. The finish is linear and elegant with a long and polished finish that emits tones of dried fruit, smoke and licorice." —Monica Larner

"Firmly structured and loaded with energy, this intense red opens with aromas of new leather, pipe tobacco, eucalyptus and a whiff of cake spice. The aromas carry over to the vibrant palate along with raspberry and red cherry set against a firm backbone of assertive but refined tannins. Tightly wound and youthfully austere, it still needs time but seems destined to blossom into a beauty. Drink 2025–2043." —Kerin O'Keefe

More about Massolino

Massolino's been the north star of Serralunga d'Alba since 1896. Giovanni founded it; his son built the cellar. Today they work with Barolo's most esteemed crus—Vigna Rionda, Parafada, and others—using a blend of old and new that respects tradition without being its slave. This is what happens when a family doesn't mess with what works.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Tajarin with butter and white truffle, roast duck with porcini, or veal cheeks in red wine. Aged Toma Piemontese makes a fitting close. Earthier dishes pull out the wine's mid-palate depth beautifully.

Tasting Profile

Raspberry, dried rose, sweet tobacco, and a touch of orange peel lead a fragrant, lifted nose. The palate is graceful and mid-weighted, with the rounder, more perfumed tannin profile of Castiglione Falletto and a long, spice-dusted finish. Open an hour ahead.
