From Vigna Rionda, the most coveted cru in Serralunga d'Alba and one of Barolo's truly legendary vineyards, made by a family that has farmed Serralunga since 1896. This is the Riserva bottling, given roughly six years of aging (years in large Slavonian oak followed by extended time in bottle) before release, and it ranks among the most powerful, age-worthy wines Massolino produces. The 2010 is the prize: a benchmark classic Barolo vintage with the structure and freshness to age for decades, and Vigna Rionda from this year is a wine built for the long haul. It's drinking gorgeously now with air, but there's no rush at all, this will reward serious cellaring. A landmark Nebbiolo for a special occasion.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2010 Barolo Riserva Vigna Rionda is complex and wonderfully dynamic, just as it was when I first tasted it a few years ago. Hints of truffle, tobacco, spice box, mint and rose petal emerge with a bit of coaxing. Readers who want to start dipping into their bottles can do so, although my impression is that the best is yet to come. Personally, I am thrilled to have a few bottles stashed away." —Antonio Galloni

Robert Parker

96 points

"The 2010 Barolo Vigna Rionda Riserva is a generous and forthcoming wine that presents wave after wave of aromatic intensity. This Riserva is beautifully stitched together with precision and artistry. There is a solid core of black fruit that is surrounded by seamless tones of black cherry, spice, balsam herb and toasted anise seed. The wine is powerful and graceful all at once. The wine should age forward over the next part of the next 20 years." —Monica Larner

Wine Spectator

96 points

"This red is very savory, with tobacco, cedar, saline and tar notes swirling around a core of cherry and licorice flavors. Harmonious, if still youthful, with a balanced feel until the assertive tannins weigh in on the finish. Shows understated power."

Kerin O'Keefe

96 points

"This stunning wine opens with scents of tilled earth, leather, pipe tobacco, forest floor and wild berry. The focused, vibrant palate delivers ripe red cherry, white pepper, grilled herb, licorice and an energizing mineral note. Youthfully austere, refined tannins and fresh acidity provide impeccable balance and an impressive, age-worthy structure. Drink 2020–2045." —Kerin O'Keefe

More about Massolino

Massolino's been the north star of Serralunga d'Alba since 1896. Giovanni founded it; his son built the cellar. Today they work with Barolo's most esteemed crus—Vigna Rionda, Parafada, and others—using a blend of old and new that respects tradition without being its slave. This is what happens when a family doesn't mess with what works.
