For most of their eight generations as winemakers, the Vincey family sold their grapes to the local cooperative. This bottle is what you get now that they keep the fruit and make the Champagne themselves. Grauves is a Premier Cru Blanc de Blancs finished Extra Brut, from a tiny Côte des Blancs house that makes only Chardonnay, just 20,000 to 30,000 bottles a year. Things began to change when Quentin Vincey joined the family business in 2010. The family started bottling in 2014 with only a few hundred bottles, and today Quentin and Marine run the estate. Their cellar work is very hands-on: grapes go into an old-fashioned 4,000-kilo basket press, and the juice runs by gravity into the deep vaulted cellar pictured on the label. The wines then ferment naturally in barriques and tonneaux, and every bottle is riddled by hand. Each barrel is left to go its own way, with some going through malolactic and some growing flor, which is about as far from a uniform house style as Champagne gets. If you want a way into one of the most soulful young grower estates in the region, this is a smart place to start.

More about Vincey

Young couple Quentin and Marine Vincey run a new Champagne grower in the Grand Cru village of Oger, certified organic and biodynamic as of 2023. In the Côte des Blancs, they craft contemporary Champagnes that taste like fresh limestone and apple skin, not butter and toast. Skurnik Wines brings them to America, recognizing the potential of this emerging grower. The future of authentic, terroir-driven Champagne starts here.

Tasting Profile

Expect a textural, old-school Blanc de Blancs: lemon, green apple and white flowers layered with brioche, toasted nut and a faintly savoury, saline edge from the barrel work. The low dosage keeps it bone-dry and chalky with bright acidity, while the oak brings a creamy mousse and weight (think Burgundian Chardonnay with fine bubbles) before a long, mineral finish.
