The Selbach family has cultivated Riesling on the steep slate slopes of the Mosel since 1661, and their Auslese Schmitt showcases what makes this region's sweet wines extraordinary: not sweetness itself, but the electric tension between richness and acidity. The "Schmitt" designation refers to a specific parcel within the Zeltinger Schlossberg vineyard, one of the Middle Mosel's most prestigious sites, where weathered Devonian slate imparts a distinctive mineral signature. Picked in November at Auslese ripeness, the 2013 shows yellow plum, quince, and apple blossom with a sumptuous nectarine core, balanced by bright, salty minerality and roughly ten grams of acidity per liter holding the hundred grams of residual sugar in perfect check. Fermented with wild yeasts in traditional fuder casks and stainless steel, without fining. This is Mosel Auslese at its most restrained and elegant—a wine that will evolve beautifully for decades. Magnificent with spicy Asian cuisine or aged cheese.
