The Selbach family has cultivated Riesling on the steep slate slopes of the Mosel since 1661, and their Auslese Schmitt showcases what makes this region's sweet wines extraordinary: not sweetness itself, but the electric tension between richness and acidity. The "Schmitt" designation refers to a specific parcel within the Zeltinger Schlossberg vineyard, one of the Middle Mosel's most prestigious sites, where weathered Devonian slate imparts a distinctive mineral signature. Picked in November at Auslese ripeness, the 2013 shows yellow plum, quince, and apple blossom with a sumptuous nectarine core, balanced by bright, salty minerality and roughly ten grams of acidity per liter holding the hundred grams of residual sugar in perfect check. Fermented with wild yeasts in traditional fuder casks and stainless steel, without fining. This is Mosel Auslese at its most restrained and elegant—a wine that will evolve beautifully for decades. Magnificent with spicy Asian cuisine or aged cheese.

Antonio Galloni

93 points

"Rich, smoky aromas of yellow plum, quince, apple blossom and sweet herbs. On the palate, a sumptuous nectarine flavor is enlivened by bright, salty minerality. At once generous and crisp on the persistent finish. Unique in its restrained level of residual sugar, this is my favorite of the four Ausleses here." —Joel B. Payne

Robert Parker

94 points

"The 2013 Zeltinger Schlossberg Riesling Schmitt, which was picked November 7, and contains almost 100 grams of residual sugar and 10 grams of acidity, starts shy on the nose, although the concentration and noble honey flavors already indicate a fine Auslese style here. The wine is noble sweet and very piquant on the palate, a lovely amalgam of sensual fruit intensity, racy acidity and stimulating salinity. Very precise and long; you'd better keep it for your children." —Stephan Reinhardt

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
