Most Champagne gets its bubbles from a dose of added sugar. This Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs from Oger gets them from grapes instead. For the tirage au moût, Quentin and Marine Vincey start the second fermentation in bottle with fresh Chardonnay juice from a later harvest, so the fizz comes from fruit rather than the sugar bag. The grapes grow in parcels at the bottom of the Oger slope, facing east and southeast, where about 60 cm of brown clay sits over the chalk. The wine ferments on native yeasts in barrels made from local wood (only 15% new) and stays in them for 12 months. It then spends five full years on its lees under cork rather than a crown cap, and is bottled with zero dosage, no fining, no filtration and no added sulfur: nothing to hide behind, and nothing it needs to hide. Quentin came back to the family domaine in 2014 and Marine joined in 2018. In a few short years they've made it one of the most soulful new names in Champagne, with 8 hectares of Chardonnay farmed biodynamically (Demeter certified as of 2023).

More about Vincey

Young couple Quentin and Marine Vincey run a new Champagne grower in the Grand Cru village of Oger, certified organic and biodynamic as of 2023. In the Côte des Blancs, they craft contemporary Champagnes that taste like fresh limestone and apple skin, not butter and toast. Skurnik Wines brings them to America, recognizing the potential of this emerging grower. The future of authentic, terroir-driven Champagne starts here.

Tasting Profile

Expect a Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs from Oger with extra depth: lemon, green apple and white flowers layered with toasted brioche, hazelnut and a gentle oxidative note from barrel fermentation and long lees ageing. The palate is medium-bodied with a fine mousse, chalky minerality and bright, uncushioned acidity from zero dosage, finishing bone-dry, saline and long.

Champagne

Champagne boasts some of the world’s greatest luxury brands with Krug, Cristal and, of course, Dom Perignon. But it’s also home to hundreds of small dynamic producers—farmers who grow their own grapes (often organically) and make (often with natural methods) tiny amounts of pure and absolutely delicious wine that reflect the individual personalities of their villages and terroirs. Toast with these wines, for sure. But also treat them like the great wines they are: taste, drink, explore!
