Tement is one of Austria's most celebrated estates, and the Grassnitzberg vineyard is where the family's story began. Planted in the early 1950s, this south-southeast-facing site sits on a massive 16-million-year-old coralline limestone reef in the Sudsteiermark. Riff is a specific cooler block within Grassnitzberg, classified Erste Lage in the Austrian STK hierarchy, the tier just below the Grosse Lage Zieregg. Naturally fermented and aged 24 months on lees in large neutral oak, this Sauvignon Blanc shows everything Tement does best: deep limestone minerality, citrus precision, and a salty, savory length that has nothing to do with the grassy-tropical Sauvignon cliche. A serious wine from a serious site, in a more accessible idiom.

"The 2022 Ried Grassnitzberg Riff 1STK Sauvignon Blanc is enormously aromatic on the nose, with passion fruit, papaya and ripe, lush peach aromas. Full-bodied, intense and fresh on the palate, with remarkable finesse and purity and highly stimulating salinity with tonic lemon notes, this is a beautifully distinctive Sauvignon Blanc from east/southeast-facing terraces climbing from 330 to 399 meters above sea level (inclination: 33% to 40%). The wine is remarkably light, finessed and elegant and thoroughly Styrian in its coolish and even herbal character. 13% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at 1,450 meters above sea level in Lech/Arlberg in August 2025." —Stephan Reinhardt

Perfect Pairings

Try with grilled white fish, oysters on the half shell, schnitzel with lemon, or chicken paillard with herbs. Goat cheese, asparagus, fresh ricotta with peas, and crab cakes also work beautifully alongside this saline, mineral wine.

Tasting Profile

Lemon zest, grapefruit pith, white currant, caper, crushed shells, and chalk. Medium-bodied, taut, and saline, with a long, mineral-driven finish. Stylistically far from grassy New World Sauvignon: restrained, savory, and built around limestone.
