Magnum format of Boudignon's most personal wine. The Anjou Blanc À Françoise is named for his late mother Françoise and his father François; he only releases it in vintages he feels honor them. The 2023 comes from his oldest Chenin Blanc vines (around 40 years) planted on shallow schist, rhyolite and sand, and is aged the extra two years that have become standard for this cuvée since 2021. In magnum, the slower oxygen exchange amplifies everything Boudignon does best — chalk, salted citrus, white peach, honeysuckle — and stretches the aging arc by years. A serious bottle for a serious table.

More about Thibaud Boudignon

Thibaud Boudignon makes some of the most electric dry Chenin Blanc in the Loire: Savennières and Anjou Blanc that taste less of honey and ripe fruit than of salt, citrus and schist.

Boudignon grew up partly in Bordeaux and wanted to be an Olympic judo champion. When that didn't pan out, he went to work in vineyards and cellars, in the South of France, in Bordeaux, in Australia and in Gevrey-Chambertin, before arriving at Château Soucherie in Savennières in 2007. In 2009 he began making wine under his own name, starting with bought grapes and an Anjou Blanc named for his mother, Françoise, and his grandfather, François. His centerpiece is the Clos de la Hutte, a walled former abbey site in La Possonnière, which he bought and replanted with massale selections of old-vine Chenin, some from Domaine Huet.

The farming is biodynamic and close to obsessive; the soils are thin clay over the fractured dark schist locals call Anjou Noir. He presses whole clusters, ferments with native yeasts in old barrels and concrete, blocks malolactic to keep the acidity, and never fines or filters. There's also a bone-dry Rosé de Loire, mostly Cabernet Franc, made with the same care. Expect precision, energy and a long saline finish.

Flatiron's Take

From the Importer

What Skurnik Wines has to say about this wine:

100% Chenin Blanc

High density plantings

35 year old vines

Grown on shallow soils of grey schist and rhyolite (volcanic soil)

Indigenous yeast fermentation

No malo

Aged in 350l and 700l barrels (30% new)

Made from his finest plots in Anjou. The wine is named after his late mother, who tragically passed away from cancer when Thibaud was 17 years old. He makes this wine in her honor, without any compromise. If he feels the wine does not live up to his mother’s name, he won’t make it.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

A wine for a tableful of people and a long meal: roast turbot, butter-poached lobster, whole chicken with morels, or aged Comté at the end. Magnum format ages even slower — a wine to open in a decade or more.

Tasting Profile

Bone-dry, medium-bodied, magnum-slow. Chalk and crushed stone, white peach, salted lemon, honeysuckle, orchard blossom. Quietly powerful, weightless on its feet, with a long mineral finish and decades of life ahead.
