One acre of hundred-year-old Syrah on a punishingly steep slope, bottled entirely on its own. That parcel is La Geynale, in the Reynard sector at the heart of Cornas, and rather than fold it into the estate blend Emmanuelle Verset keeps it apart as Signature. She is the sixth generation of the family whose great-uncle Noël Verset made this appellation's reputation, and she works the granite terraces organically with cover crops between the rows, ferments whole-cluster with native yeasts, and raises the wine about 22 months in mostly neutral barrels — six to eight months longer than her regular Cornas — before bottling it unfined and unfiltered. 2021 was a cool, difficult year in the Northern Rhône, with frost, hail and rain, and it rewarded growers with old vines and nerve: this is a leaner, more crystalline Cornas than the warm vintages give, lower in alcohol, tightly wound, with saline acidity and finely serrated tannins. More approachable young than a big year would be, though a few hours in a decanter now, or five years in the cellar, will pay off.
